Tribute to the Nordic Oseberg Ship

Jake came to me wanting a full sleeve Nordic tattoo based on the Oseberg ship carvings back in 2021/2002 he had a vague idea... but trusted my tattoo skills. . I jumped at the chance; but I was quite intimidated at the time. I had never studied this style, it is a bit strange to say the least, flowing beasts of unknown origin with many patterns with meticulously detailed carvings done by hand centuries ago in a land far away. A land where his ancestors once called home. • After quite a lot of studying, constant doodling and refining my knowledge of this great style, I started sketching drawings of his tattoo and playing around with various layouts i felt would look good on his arm. After some deliberation, I decided to draw the whole thing on Jake's arms freehand to maintain the proper flow. It was tricky at first, but I managed to make it all come together in a unique style giving tribute to the ship’s many details. One session at a time starting in 2022. • Over the years, my methods and styles have changed when it comes to large scale Nordic tattoos. These days this tattoo would most likely take just 2 of my 3-day session blocks, but this particular tattoo has taken 6 sessions so far over 4 years with one more to go. . We have both grown as humans during the past 4 or 5 years and it's fun to look back at how much I have improved as an artist in that time, especially when it comes to Nordic inspired viking-style tattoos. . Jake's tattoo is more than just ink; it's a tribute to one of the greatest Viking ships ever unearthed. The Oseberg Ship, an elegant yet powerful vessel, carried not just warriors to Valhalla, but the legacy of an era where the sea was both a path and a destiny. • • Like the Vikings who carved their journeys into the waves, their belongings, and their surroundings, we carve our stories into skin.
